Mentorship by Phone - Program Overview

The Hawaii Dietetic Association has initiated a Mentorship by Phone Program whereby UH dietetics students are mentored by RDs. You'll want to participate because it's:

Convenient -
Coordinator Daryl Smith-Oswald does the initial the mentor-mentee matching. You'll meet with your assigned student by telephone from the convenience of your home or office, perhaps once a month. Those with webcams can meet over the Internet to "see" each other.

Valuable - UH dietetics students get the insights they crave about the career they're pursuing. RDs get insights into the future dietetics workforce--those who will soon be their colleagues!

Rewarding - Association involvement in the future of the dietetics profession has inherent rewards. Try it and see!

Interested? Here's How It Works

A. Prospective RD mentors volunteer by completing the Mentor Questionnaire.
B. Students request a mentor by
completing the Student Questionnaire.
C. Match-ups are completed, meetings are scheduled, and mentoring starts.

Forms are sent to Daryl Smith-Oswald, Mentorship Program Coordinator. She will match a mentor with a student based on information provided on the forms. Then she'll email each RD-student pair to facilitate their first meeting. Priority goes to students with nearest graduation dates.

The mentor should contact their mentee by email or phone to set up the first telephone meeting. At that initial meeting, regular future meetings should be scheduled. Once a month is usually enough for most students.

We trust this will be a rewarding experience for all involved!
